CONTEMPORAry NOMADS COLLECTION

At the 59th Biennale di Venezia I presented ‘Gates of Turan’, an immersive textile installation commissioned for the Kyrgyz Pavilion, linking age-old felt making nomadic techniques to transformative contemporary practice. It sparked a conversation with Varese based rug and textile producer Kian Rahnamoon of Amir Art Collection, leading to the exploration of innovative creative routes embedding rug making techniques into the fabric of my creative process.

In the ten months following the Biennale a collaborative partnership took shape, resulting in the creation, design and production of the Contemporary Nomads Collection, comprising the Talisman Tattoos, Shyrdak and Talkhimt Tadounit ( World As Tent ) unique and limited edition series.

TALISMAN TATTOO ONE

The Talisman Tattoos elevate my postribal artworks into meditative rugs - a transformative interpretation of powerful designs taking their origin in ceremonial sacred Amazigh tattoo artistry. Elements of Tribal Semiology have been a central source of inspiration and an entering point into an archaeology of memory/future reaching to the rich/pagan wisdom of sacred tribal archaic cosmogonies; particularly links between Iran, North Africa and Central Asia

SHYRDAK ONE

Following my cultural Ambassadorship for the Kyrgyz National Pavilion which was the culmination of a year of nomadic co-existence with the tribal Kyrgyz craftswomen of the Tien Shan Range, the Shyrdak Series come as the natural collaborative continuum with Kyrgyz tribal nomadic culture.

It felt good and virtuous to develop felt based rug oriented units - Shyrdaks - with the Alyn Kol craftswomen of the Naryn valley, pushing forth and solidifying my adventure into the vortex of ancient nomadic Central Asian semiology.

WORLD AS TENT ( TALKHIMT TADOUNIT ) ONE

Talkhimt Tadounit : World As Tent in Amazigh. My Postribal approach layers and connects archaic cosmogonies through the transformative power of contemporary practice.

World As Tent marries the Amazigh tradition to the American Native : the triangle as the Talisman of fertility - mother earth - and the triangle and its bars as the semiotic translation of the tippee - the Tent.

Ultimately the world is our tent, we shall nurture it.
