GNAWA TRAIL centers on the the 1st Essaouira Gnawa Festival ( 1999-2000 )- exploring through a multilayered road trip format the origins of North African Gnawa music while questioning the impact of western influences on an age old sacred musical brotherhood .
Shot in 1999 and released in 2000 on the occasion of `L’Année du Maroc´ - and screened at the Louvre’s Musée des Arts Décoratifs - GNAWA TRAIL also stands as Firouz FarmanFarmaian’s early thrust into feature length multiformat exploration, raising thematics of identity and resilience in front of market forces.
